In addition to the “cool factor,” wind tunnel testing provides a means of measuring a cyclist’s aerodynamic drag or the force that keeps them from riding at 30 mph. Wind tunnel testing also provides a controlled environment to make numerous adjustments in equipment and rider position in order to learn how to reduce an individuals aerodynamic drag. Learning how to make a rider more aerodynamic is only way to go faster without training harder. By the numbers, reducing aerodynamic drag by 0.25 lbs can save an average rider: · 3 minutes in a 40k, · 6 minutes in 56 miles, and · over 13 minutes in 112 miles. Gear West will help you set up a testing protocol and take you through a dry run before you ever step inside the tunnel. This advice and practice will help you learn from our previous tunnel testing experience and allow you to best use your time in the tunnel. Understanding the value wind tunnel testing can be confusing, please contact David or Kevin with any questions. They will be happy to answer any questions in detail.

Travel Notes: If flying into Boston, fly into Logon International Airport. Traffic will be tough Friday afternoon, so the preferred method of travel to MIT is the “T” (Boston Subway). There is a T Station at the airport. Take a short shuttle bus ride from your terminal to the station. The T is $2 to go anywhere. The ride to MIT will probably take you 20 min. Remember, we will bring your bike, so luggage shouldn’t be a problem. The T is also how we will be traveling around Boston for outings.

Zipp aims at providing wheels and aero-accessories for campers to incorporate into their wind tunnels tests use as demos for group rides. Litespeed aims at bringing their demo trailer, so campers can ride an assortment of Litespeed bikes on the group rides and in the wind tunnel. With Litespeed bikes available, campers will only need to bring their Tri or TT bike from home, and will still have the option of riding a road bike on group rides. Speedo will be providing FSII suits to demo in the pool and in the wind tunnel. This a great opportunity to see how the suits work for you before investing. |
